SKATE VICTORIA/INLINE HOCKEY DEVELOPMENT UPDATE
August 26th, 2008In June we farewelled Hugues Deraps, Sports Development Officer who has returned to his homeland of Canada for a couple of years. Hugues will still be responsible for the maintenance of both the Skate Victoria and Inline Hockey websites and carrying out
various projects for us including the design and development of material for the Good Sports Project and promotional material.
Pauline Byne will be carrying out development activities on a contractual basis. For those who may not know Pauline she was the Rink Operator at Lilydale for 8 years which gives her experience in all aspects of skating. She has also held the position of Inline Hockey Branch Chairperson, Club President at different times and plays inline hockey.
At present a 4 week On Skates program is being conducted at St Xavier College Berwick with skating clinics and presentations at schools being carried out on a weekly basis.
Pauline will also be heading up the Deaf Children’s Program team of Leanne Mills (mum of deaf brothers William & David who play ILH) Jenny French and myself.
Skate Victoria has been successful in securing funding through Sport & Recreation Victoria for the following programs
Good Sports Program $20,000 for 2 years
What are we going to do
In the next few months I will be talking to clubs to gather information on how Skate Victoria/Inline Hockey Victoria can assist clubs in establishing a ‘Good Sports Club’ environment for skaters, players, parents, spectators and administrators.
We are in the process of developing a Parent pocket sized Handbook which will be distributed to 2009 members to give parents a better understanding of their child’s sport
Deaf Children’s Program $20,000 for 2 years
What are we going to do
In September we have our first joint school holiday clinic with Deaf Children Australia at The Zone Rink in Bendigo which will be followed up with a clinic a fortnight later. Further school holiday programs will be conducted over Christmas at Geelong, Moe and metropolitan Melbourne. We are also looking at working with the Villa Maria Respite program to give children the opportunity to experience skating.
We are all very excited about our first 4 week school’s program being conducted at the Victorian College for the Deaf in October. We hope to run the program at 3 – 4 schools over the next few months.
Roller Derby continues to grow with the great work of the Victorian Roller Derby League with leagues now being set up in Geelong, Ballarat and Castlemaine.
Next week-end Bernie Walden (Artisic Chairperson and Coach) Jeannie Polson (VRDL Development Officer) and myself are heading down to Geelong for a Coaching session with girls from the regional areas mentioned above.
Finally goodluck to all skaters going to Nationals and I’ll be back to report on development updates when they happen.
